Buckskins are bay horses that carry a single cream dilution gene, giving them their signature rich caramel coat paired with black or dark brown points. Found across many breeds, buckskins can range in shade from soft yellow to deep golden hues.

Established in 1971, the International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) is the world’s largest registry dedicated to this striking color. Orren Mixer’s painting The Buckskin was commissioned in 1996 and unveiled at the 1998 IBHA World Championship Show. The artwork features a buckskin stallion surrounded by nine mares and nine foals, showcasing the diverse color variations recognized by the IBHA—including buckskin, dun, red dun, and grulla. The original piece is proudly housed at the AQHA Heritage Center and Museum in Amarillo, Texas.
