Types of Summer Rugs

Different summer rugs are designed to provide varying levels of protection from insects, sunlight and dirt while remaining lightweight and breathable.

Cotton Rugs

Cotton rugs and combos are a popular choice for keeping horses clean before competitions, travelling or while stabled. Lightweight and comfortable, they help reduce dust and dirt but offer only limited protection from biting insects.

Many horse owners also use cotton rugs as an under rug beneath a winter turnout or stable rug. The cotton rug helps keep the outer rug cleaner by acting as a barrier between the horse's coat and the heavier rug. If you have two or more cotton rugs, they can be rotated and washed regularly while the outer winter rug stays in use, making rug management easier and extending the time between washing heavier rugs.

Fly Mesh Rugs

Fly mesh rugs are designed to help protect horses from flies, midges and other insects while allowing air to circulate freely. Available with or without attached necks, they are one of the most popular choices for paddock use during the warmer months.

Anti-Itch Rugs

Anti-itch rugs provide greater body coverage than standard fly rugs, often including an integrated neck, belly wrap and extended protection around the shoulders and tail. They are commonly used for horses that are particularly sensitive to insect bites, including those affected by Queensland itch or sweet itch.

Coolers and Anti-Sweat Rugs

Coolers are designed to assist with moisture management after exercise or washing. Breathable fabrics help wick moisture away from the horse while reducing the risk of becoming chilled as they cool down.

Queensland Itch and Sweet Itch

Queensland itch, also known as sweet itch, is an allergic reaction to the bites of Culicoides midges. Affected horses may rub their mane, tail and body excessively, resulting in hair loss, skin irritation and discomfort.

Reducing exposure to biting insects is an important part of managing the condition. Many owners choose full-coverage anti-itch rugs that include neck and belly protection, together with fly control, topical treatments and management practices such as avoiding peak midge activity at dawn and dusk.

If you suspect your horse has Queensland itch or another skin condition, seek advice from your veterinarian to develop the most appropriate management plan.

Choosing the Right Fit

A summer rug should sit comfortably across the horse's shoulders, with adequate freedom of movement and secure fastening without excessive pressure or rubbing.

Most summer rugs use the same sizing system as winter rugs, although the fit can vary slightly between brands and styles. If you're replacing an existing rug, checking the manufacturer's sizing guide is the best way to achieve the correct fit.

You can also choose between standard neck rugs, combo rugs with an attached neck, or add separate hoods and neck covers for additional protection from insects and the sun.

If you're unsure which style or size is best for your horse, our experienced team is happy to help you choose the right summer rug.

🟩 ASCOT EXPERT TIP

Use a lightweight cotton rug under your winter rug to keep the outer rug cleaner. Having two cotton rugs lets you rotate and wash them while your heavier turnout rug stays in service.

Discover more in our FAQs

Do flies bite through cotton rugs?

Cotton rugs help keep horses clean by reducing dust, dirt and grass seeds, but they offer only limited protection from biting insects. If your horse needs protection from flies and midges, a mesh fly rug is generally a better choice.

What is the best rug for Queensland itch?

Many owners choose a full-coverage anti-itch rug with an integrated neck and belly protection to help reduce exposure to biting insects. The best rug will depend on your horse, the severity of the condition and your management routine. Anti-itch rugs are often used alongside fly control measures and veterinary advice where appropriate.

Does my horse need a hood or neck cover?

A hood or neck cover can provide additional protection from insects, dust and sun, particularly for horses that spend long periods in the paddock or are sensitive to insect bites. Whether you choose a separate hood or an attached combo neck depends on your horse and how the rug will be used.

Can summer rugs be washed?

Most summer rugs can be washed to remove dirt, sweat and hair, helping to extend their life and keep them comfortable for your horse. Always follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer, as washing recommendations may vary between fabrics and brands.

What is a cooler rug?

A cooler rug is designed to help manage moisture after exercise, washing or travel. Breathable fabrics assist with wicking moisture away from the horse while allowing air to circulate during the cooling process. Coolers are not intended as paddock rugs.

How can I stop a fly rug from rubbing?

Correct fit is the most important factor in preventing rubs. A rug should allow free movement through the shoulders without being excessively loose or tight. Regularly check for signs of rubbing, keep the rug clean, and consider trying a different style or cut if your horse is particularly sensitive.

Can a horse wear a fly rug all day?

Yes, provided the rug fits correctly, remains clean and is appropriate for the weather conditions. It's a good idea to check your horse daily for signs of rubbing, overheating or damage to the rug, particularly during periods of hot or humid weather.
