Wither & Back Pads

Front risers, rear risers and gel wither pads allow targeted changes beneath the saddle while offering varied cushioning and grip. The range includes half saddle pads, an Acavallo gel pad with sheepskin edging, a Wintec comfort pad and Grainge balance designs. Choose a saddle riser pad for front or rear lift, or compare cut-out, non-slip and sheepskin saddle pad constructions. These pads can refine an appropriate setup, but fitting advice is recommended when a saddle bridges, rocks or creates persistent pressure.

Choosing the Right Wither and Back Pad

Wither and back pads are designed to improve comfort, provide additional cushioning and help fine-tune the fit of a correctly fitted saddle. Different pad styles serve different purposes, so choosing the right one depends on both your horse and your saddle.

Wither Relief Pads

Wither relief pads provide additional cushioning around the wither area and can be helpful for horses with prominent or sensitive withers. They are designed to improve comfort while maintaining clearance over the spine.

Front and Rear Risers

Front and rear risers are used to make minor adjustments to the balance of a saddle where appropriate.

A front riser lifts the front of the saddle, while a rear riser lifts the back. They can be useful in specific situations, such as young horses changing shape or horses returning to work, but they should never be used as a substitute for correct saddle fit.

Shim Pads

Shim pads allow small adjustments to be made by adding or removing inserts in selected areas. They are commonly used while horses are developing muscle, recovering from injury or when minor changes to saddle balance are required.

Pad Materials

Sheepskin offers excellent breathability, moisture management and natural cushioning, making it a popular choice for sensitive horses.

Gel pads provide additional cushioning and are easy to clean, making them suitable for everyday use.

Memory foam pads, including quality systems such as Prolite, help distribute pressure and are commonly used within adjustable shim systems.

Felt pads remain a traditional option, particularly for stock and western riding.

Discover more in our FAQs

Do I need a wither pad if I already use a saddlecloth?

Not necessarily. A correctly fitted saddle used with a suitable saddlecloth is often all that's required. Wither pads are generally used where additional cushioning or support is beneficial for the individual horse.

Can a back pad fix a poorly fitting saddle?

No. Pads are designed to fine-tune the fit of an otherwise suitable saddle or accommodate temporary changes in your horse's shape. If a saddle is fundamentally the wrong shape or size, it should be professionally adjusted or replaced.

What is a Prolite pad?

Prolite pads use lightweight, high-performance foam designed to absorb shock and distribute pressure. Their shim systems also allow minor adjustments to saddle balance as your horse changes shape.

Can I machine wash wither and back pads?

Many synthetic pads are machine washable, while sheepskin products often require specialised wool detergents and gentle care. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

How do I know if I need a front or rear riser?

The answer depends on why the saddle is sitting out of balance. Before adding a riser, it's important to determine whether the issue is caused by the saddle fit, the horse's conformation or changes in muscle development. If you're unsure, our experienced team can help assess which option is most appropriate.

How do I know if my saddle is bridging?

Bridging occurs when the saddle panels make contact at the front and back but leave a gap through the middle, creating uneven pressure. While shim systems can sometimes help with minor bridging, it's important to identify the underlying cause before adding extra padding.

Ascot Expert Tip

Pads should solve a specific problem—not become a permanent collection under your saddle. If you find yourself continually adding more pads to make a saddle comfortable, it's usually a sign that the saddle fit should be reassessed.
