Stirrup Irons

Safety releases, sloped treads, toe cages and lightweight horse stirrups cover children, dressage riders and jumpers. Tech stirrups include Venice safety and discipline-specific designs, while Compositi stirrups provide colourful polymer options and Wintec offers children’s cage styles. The collection also includes traditional stirrup irons and jumping stirrups in different widths, finishes and tread angles. Select the size around the riding boot, leaving suitable clearance on both sides rather than relying on the rider’s age alone.

Choosing the Right Stirrup Irons

The best stirrup iron depends on your riding discipline, experience and personal preference. Modern stirrups are designed to improve comfort, stability and, in many cases, rider safety.

Safety Stirrups

Safety stirrups are designed to help reduce the risk of a rider's foot becoming caught in the stirrup during a fall. Different manufacturers achieve this in different ways, including flexible outer arms, hinged sides or specially shaped designs that allow the foot to release more easily under certain conditions. Precision-machined designs such as Tech Stirrups provide outstanding grip, balance and durability, making them a popular choice for dressage, jumping, eventing and serious competition riders.

They are particularly popular with Pony Club riders, eventers, showjumpers, trail riders and anyone looking for additional peace of mind while riding.

Traditional Stainless Steel Stirrups

Stainless steel stirrups remain the classic choice for many riders. They're strong, durable and suitable for almost every discipline, making them a popular option for everyday riding, Pony Club and competition.

Lightweight Composite Stirrups

Composite stirrups offer excellent strength while reducing weight, making them comfortable for everyday riding and easy to maintain. Composite stirrups combine strength with lightweight construction and are comfortable for everyday riding. They're easy to maintain, won't rust and are popular with Pony Club riders, leisure riders and anyone wanting a lighter alternative to traditional stainless steel.

Compositi stirrups have become one of the most popular composite stirrup brands thanks to their durability, affordability and rider-friendly designs.

Treads and Grip

The tread is the part of the stirrup that supports your boot, and different designs can make a noticeable difference to comfort and security.

Standard Treads

Traditional rubber tread inserts provide reliable grip for everyday riding and can usually be replaced as they wear.

Wide Treads

Wider footbeds distribute pressure across more of the rider's foot, improving comfort during long rides and providing greater stability.

High-Grip Treads

Many modern stirrups feature stainless steel pins or textured tread designs that provide increased grip in wet or muddy conditions, making them particularly popular with jumping, eventing and cross-country riders.

Ascot Expert Tip

Many riders spend a lot of time choosing a saddle but overlook their stirrup irons. Your stirrups are one of your main points of contact with the horse, so choosing a design that offers the right balance of comfort, grip and security can make a surprising difference to your confidence and position in the saddle.

Are safety stirrups compulsory for Pony Club?

Safety stirrups are becoming increasingly popular with Pony Club riders because they are designed to help reduce the risk of foot entrapment in the event of a fall. Equipment rules vary between Pony Club associations and disciplines, so always check your current rule book before competing.

What are the benefits of safety stirrups?

Safety stirrups are designed to help the rider's foot release more easily during certain types of falls. Many riders also appreciate the improved grip, wider footbeds and increased confidence they provide for everyday riding and competition.

What is the difference between Tech Stirrups and Compositi stirrups?

Both are excellent brands but suit different riders.

Tech Stirrups are premium precision-machined aluminium stirrups, renowned for their exceptional grip, balance and advanced safety features, making them popular with dressage, jumping and eventing riders.

Compositi stirrups are lightweight composite stirrups that offer outstanding value, durability and comfort, making them a favourite for Pony Club, leisure riding and everyday use.

What size stirrup irons do I need?

Stirrup irons are selected according to the width of your riding boot. As a general guide, there should be approximately 10–15 mm (around half an inch) of clearance on each side of your boot when your foot is correctly positioned in the stirrup.

If you're unsure, our experienced team can help you choose the correct size.

Should I choose lightweight or heavier stirrups?

Both have their advantages. Lightweight composite and aluminium stirrups reduce overall weight and are popular for everyday riding, while many riders appreciate the feel and balance of traditional stainless steel stirrups. The best choice comes down to your riding discipline and personal preference.

Do you sell racing stirrups?

Yes. We stock lightweight racing stirrups suitable for thoroughbred racing and trackwork, along with a wide range of stirrup irons for English riding disciplines.

Can I use safety stirrups for dressage?

Many riders choose safety stirrups for dressage schooling and competition. Equipment rules can vary between organisations and competition levels, so it's always worth checking the current rule book for your discipline before competing.

Ascot Expert Tip

If you're upgrading your stirrups, don't forget to inspect your stirrup leathers at the same time. Worn or stretched leathers can affect your riding position and should be replaced if they show signs of excessive wear.
