How do I choose the right reins?
The best reins depend on your riding discipline, the level of grip you prefer and the type of bridle you use.
Plain leather, rubber grip, continental (laced), web and leather, stock and western reins all offer different feel, grip and appearance. If you're unsure which style is best for you, our experienced team is happy to help.
What is the difference between rubber grip and web reins?
Rubber grip reins feature a textured rubber surface that provides excellent grip in wet conditions or when riding with sweaty hands.
Web reins combine woven webbing with leather, offering a lightweight, comfortable feel with good grip for everyday riding and training.
Both are popular choices, with the best option coming down to personal preference and riding discipline.
Can I use plain leather reins for jumping?
Yes. Many riders use plain leather reins across a variety of disciplines.
However, riders who prefer additional grip—particularly for jumping, eventing or riding in wet conditions—often choose rubber grip or continental reins.
Are reins sold separately from bridles?
Yes. Replacement reins are available separately, making it easy to replace worn reins or customise your existing bridle.
When choosing new reins, check that the attachment style, colour and size are compatible with your bridle.
What size reins does my horse need?
Reins are available in a range of lengths to suit ponies through to large horses.
The correct size depends on your horse, the type of bridle and your personal preference. If you're unsure which size is right, our team is happy to help.
How do I care for leather and rubber grip reins?
Regular cleaning helps keep your reins safe, comfortable and looking their best.
Leather reins should be cleaned and conditioned using quality leather care products. Rubber grip reins can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, while the leather sections should still be cleaned and conditioned regularly.
Before every ride, inspect your reins for signs of wear around the stitching, billets and buckles, replacing them if they become worn or damaged.
What are continental (laced) reins?
Continental, or laced, reins feature raised leather grips woven into the rein to provide additional feel without using rubber.
They are a popular choice for riders who prefer the appearance of traditional leather reins while enjoying a little extra grip.
