What Makes a Jumping Saddle Different?

Jumping saddles are specifically designed to support the rider's position over fences while allowing the horse complete freedom through the shoulders and back. Several key features distinguish them from dressage and general purpose saddles.

Forward-Cut Flap

Jumping saddles feature a forward-cut flap that accommodates the rider's shorter stirrup length and more bent knee position. This allows the leg to remain comfortably supported when riding in a light seat or two-point position over fences.

Knee and Thigh Blocks

Most modern jumping saddles incorporate knee blocks, and many also feature thigh blocks, to help stabilise the rider's leg without restricting movement. The size and position of the blocks vary considerably between models, ranging from close-contact designs with minimal support through to larger blocks designed for greater security in eventing and cross-country.

Flatter Seat

Compared with a dressage saddle, a jumping saddle has a flatter, more open seat. This allows the rider to move freely out of the saddle over fences while maintaining balance throughout the jump.

Billet and Girth Arrangement

Most jumping saddles use short billets that are paired with a standard long girth. The girth buckles sit beneath the saddle flap, providing a neat profile under the rider's leg while allowing easy adjustment.

Choosing the Right Jumping Saddle

Selecting the right jumping saddle involves much more than choosing a brand. The correct saddle should suit your riding discipline, your horse's shape and your own riding position.

Choose the Saddle for Your Discipline

Different jumping disciplines place different demands on both horse and rider.

  • Showjumping riders often prefer close-contact saddles with a flatter seat and greater freedom of movement.
  • Event riders frequently choose saddles offering additional support, such as a slightly deeper seat, larger knee blocks or monoflap construction for enhanced communication.
  • Hunter riders generally favour a more traditional cut with a flatter seat and understated knee blocks that promote an elegant position.

Gullet Width and Channel Width

Correct saddle fit begins with choosing the appropriate gullet width and channel width.

The gullet width determines how the saddle fits over your horse's withers and shoulders. Many modern jumping saddles, including selected Bates, Wintec and Thorowgood models, feature adjustable gullet systems that allow the saddle width to be altered as your horse changes shape.

The channel width is the space running between the panels from front to back. It should provide adequate clearance over the spine while distributing the rider's weight evenly across the horse's back.

Different horses also suit different tree shapes. Some require a flatter profile, while others are better suited to a more curved or hoop tree. Selecting the correct combination is one of the most important aspects of saddle fitting.

Seat Shape and Rider Support

Jumping saddles are available with varying seat depths and block configurations.

Traditional close-contact saddles offer a flatter seat with minimal blocks, allowing maximum freedom of movement. Modern competition saddles often feature a moderately deeper seat with more supportive knee blocks, while many eventing saddles provide additional security for cross-country riding.

The best choice depends on your riding style, experience and personal preference. Sitting in several different models is the easiest way to determine which design feels most natural.

Position, Two-Point and Why the Saddle Matters

A well-fitted jumping saddle should support your position without restricting your movement. It should allow you to maintain a balanced, secure lower leg on the approach, remain centred over the fence, and return smoothly to the saddle on landing.

Your knee should sit comfortably against the knee block, the flap should accommodate your leg position without interference, and the saddle should provide enough freedom for you to move naturally between a seated position and a light two-point position throughout your round.

Common signs that your saddle may not be fitting correctly include:

  • Your knee consistently slips in front of or below the knee block.
  • You feel pushed forward or backwards during the jump.
  • Your lower leg becomes unstable over fences.
  • The saddle shifts, rocks or slips during work.
  • Your horse becomes reluctant to jump, hollows through the back or begins refusing fences despite otherwise consistent training.

If you notice any of these signs, it's worth having your saddle professionally assessed. An incorrectly fitted saddle can affect rider position, restrict your horse's movement and reduce performance. Identifying and correcting fit issues early can improve comfort, confidence and overall performance for both horse and rider.

What size jumping saddle do I need?

Jumping saddles are available in a range of seat sizes, typically from 15.5" to 18.5", depending on the brand and model.

The correct seat size depends on several factors, including your build, leg length, riding position and personal preference. Because jumping saddles have a flatter, more open seat than dressage saddles, the same rider may ride in different seat sizes depending on the saddle's design.

It's also important that the saddle is an appropriate length for your horse's back, as a saddle that is too long can extend beyond the horse's weight-bearing area.

If you're unsure which size is right for you, our experienced saddle fitting team can help you choose the most suitable jumping saddle before you purchase.

Can I use an all-purpose saddle for jumping?

Yes, an all-purpose saddle is suitable for flatwork, low-level jumping, Pony Club and general riding. If you're only jumping occasionally or over smaller fences, an all-purpose saddle can be a practical choice.

If you're regularly showjumping, eventing or training over larger fences, a dedicated jumping saddle is the better option. The forward-cut flap, flatter seat and supportive knee blocks are specifically designed to help maintain a secure, balanced position over fences.

What is the difference between a close-contact saddle and an event saddle?

A close-contact jumping saddle is designed primarily for showjumping. It typically features a flatter seat, a closer feel and smaller knee blocks, allowing maximum freedom of movement and close communication with the horse.

An event saddle is designed to provide additional security across all three phases of eventing, particularly cross-country. Many feature a slightly deeper seat, larger knee and thigh blocks, and are often available in monoflap designs for closer contact.

The best choice depends on the type of riding you do most often.

What brand of jumping saddle is best?

There is no single "best" jumping saddle. The right saddle is the one that fits both you and your horse.

At Ascot Saddlery, we stock leading brands including Pessoa, Bates, Wintec, Arena and Thorowgood, each offering different fits, features and rider feel.

Our experienced team can recommend the models most likely to suit your horse's conformation, your riding discipline and your budget.

Do I need a special jumping girth?

Most jumping saddles are designed to be used with a standard long girth. The correct girth length depends on your horse, saddle and billet configuration rather than breed alone.

Anatomically shaped girths, elastic inserts and padded designs are all popular options that can improve comfort and freedom of movement. Our team can help you choose the most suitable girth for your saddle and horse.

What is a monoflap jumping saddle?

A monoflap jumping saddle has a single flap rather than the traditional double-flap construction. This places the rider's leg closer to the horse, improving feel and communication while reducing bulk beneath the leg.

Monoflap saddles are particularly popular with event riders and many showjumpers who prefer a close-contact feel. The choice between a monoflap and traditional saddle largely comes down to personal preference.

How long does a leather jumping saddle last?

A quality leather jumping saddle can last many years, and often decades, when properly cared for and regularly maintained.

Saddles with traditional wool flocking should be checked periodically and may require re-flocking as the wool settles. Saddles fitted with the CAIR Cushion System, such as many Bates and Wintec models, do not require re-flocking but should still be professionally checked every 12 to 18 months to ensure they continue to fit both horse and rider correctly.

Regular cleaning, conditioning and correct storage will also help maximise the life of your saddle.

Can I finance a jumping saddle?

Yes. We offer a range of finance options to help spread the cost of your new jumping saddle into manageable repayments.

Whether you're purchasing your first jumping saddle or investing in a premium competition model, our team can explain the finance options available and help you find a solution that suits your budget.

Do you sell ex-demo jumping saddles?

Yes. We regularly have a selection of ex-demonstration and quality used jumping saddles available at reduced prices.

Availability changes regularly, so browse our Ex-Demo Saddles collection or contact our team to find out what's currently in stock.

What is the difference between a hunter saddle and a jumping saddle?

Although they look similar, hunter and jumping saddles are designed for different disciplines.

A hunter saddle generally features a slightly flatter seat, a longer and more traditional flap, and a more understated knee block to promote the classic position favoured in the hunter ring.

A jumping saddle has a more forward-cut flap, supportive knee blocks and is designed to position the rider comfortably over fences during showjumping and eventing.

Our team can help you decide which style best suits the type of riding you do most often.
