Collection: Dressage Saddles

Monoflap, traditional and high-wither dressage saddles offer choices for different horses, rider positions and levels of close contact. Compare a PDS dressage saddle with Bates models for dressage and the Thorowgood dressage range across standard, wide, high and low-wither profiles. Bates, PDS and Thorowgood provide black or brown options, with synthetic and leather constructions represented in the collection. Seat, flap and tree configurations vary between models, giving riders several practical points for a shortlist. Arrange appropriate fitting support before purchase, as the correct selection needs to suit both horse and rider rather than being based on seat size or appearance alone.

What Makes a Dressage Saddle Different

Dressage saddles have three features that separate them from jumping and all-purpose saddles.

Deep seat with a high cantle. The seat sits the rider in a balanced central position, with the cantle holding the seat in place during sitting trot and the lateral movements. The seat depth varies by brand and model - some riders want very deep, others prefer moderate.

Long, straight flap. The flap runs straight down rather than cutting forward. This gives the rider's long leg room to hang naturally and apply the leg aids without the flap getting in the way. The leather is usually thicker than jumping flaps, contributing to the saddle's overall weight and feel.

Long-billet girthing. Dressage saddles use long billets that buckle low on the horse, paired with a short girth (often 24 to 30 inches). This keeps the girth buckles away from the rider's leg and gives a cleaner line under the flap.

Choosing the Right Dressage Saddle

Selecting the right dressage saddle is about finding the best fit for both horse and rider. While comfort is important, the correct saddle should also promote balance, freedom of movement and clear communication through the rider's aids.

Gullet Width and Channel Width

Two of the most important aspects of saddle fit are gullet width and channel width.

Gullet width determines how the saddle fits over your horse's withers and shoulders. Many modern saddles, including Bates, Wintec, Arena and Thorowgood, feature adjustable gullet systems that allow the saddle width to be altered as your horse develops muscle or changes shape.

Channel width is the space running the full length of the saddle between the panels. The channel sits over your horse's spine and should provide adequate clearance from front to back. A channel that is too narrow can place pressure on the spine and surrounding muscles, while the correct channel width allows your horse to move freely and comfortably.

Different horses also suit different tree shapes. Some horses require a flatter profile, while others are better suited to a more curved or hoop tree. Choosing the correct combination is one of the most important parts of achieving a comfortable saddle fit.

Seat Depth

Dressage saddles are available with varying seat depths to suit different riding styles and preferences.

A deeper seat offers greater support and stability, making it popular with riders who enjoy feeling securely positioned in the saddle. A moderately deep or more open seat allows greater freedom of movement and is often preferred by riders with longer legs, longer torsos or those riding multiple horses.

There is no universally "best" seat depth. It comes down to personal preference and the type of riding you do.

Knee Block Design

Knee blocks help support the rider's leg and encourage a stable position.

Many modern saddles, including several Bates and Wintec models, feature removable or adjustable knee blocks that allow riders to tailor the support to their individual position.

Other brands, such as Prestige and PDS, commonly use fixed knee blocks that provide a consistent feel and are carefully designed to complement each saddle model.

Choosing the Correct Seat Size

Dressage saddles are available in a range of seat sizes, typically from 15.5" through to 18".

Selecting the correct seat size depends on your build, leg length, riding position and the design of the saddle itself. Two riders of the same height may require different seat sizes depending on their proportions and personal preference.

It's also important to consider your horse's back length, as a saddle that is too long can extend beyond the horse's weight-bearing area.

If you're unsure which size is right for you, our experienced saddle fitting team can help you choose the most appropriate option before you purchase.

With adjustable gullet options and models suited to a variety of horse shapes, they are particularly popular for Pony Club, adult riding clubs and everyday competition.

Sitting Trot, Half-Pass and Why the Saddle Matters

A well-fitted dressage saddle should support your position, allowing you to sit comfortably through the trot while maintaining an independent seat and quiet leg.

During movements such as half-pass, shoulder-in and canter work, the saddle should remain balanced on the horse's back without rocking, slipping or restricting movement. If the saddle moves excessively, the issue is usually the fit, not your riding.

Common signs that your saddle may need checking include:

  • Your knees creep upward during sitting trot.
  • You continually slide backwards in the saddle.
  • Your stirrups feel uneven despite being adjusted to the same length.
  • Your horse begins hollowing through the back or shortening its stride.
  • White hairs, dry patches or uneven sweat marks appear beneath the saddle.

If you notice any of these signs, we recommend having your saddle professionally assessed.

What is the difference between a dressage saddle and an all-purpose saddle?

A dressage saddle has a longer, straighter flap, a deeper seat, and a higher cantle. It is built for sustained flatwork and the collected paces. An all-purpose saddle has a slightly forward-cut flap and a moderately deep seat, designed for both flatwork and low jumping. If you only do flatwork and dressage, a dressage saddle is the right choice. If you do a bit of jumping, hacking and dressage, all-purpose can be more versatile.

What size dressage saddle do I need?

Dressage seat sizes run from 15.5" (small adult or large child) up to 18" .Whilst most saddle sizes depend on the size of your bottom, your leg length is also relevant. It is also important to ensure that the size of the saddle suits your horses back. Always confirm with our team before ordering.

Can I use my dressage saddle for jumping?

Not effectively. The straight flap and deep seat that make a dressage saddle good for collected work make it the wrong shape for jumping. The flap will get in the way at fences, the seat will throw you back when you stand up, However if you are jumping less than 65cm you can use your dressage saddle if a jumping saddle is not an option For occasional jumping, an all-purpose saddle will be the betteright choice. For serious jumping, get a jumping saddle.

What brand of dressage saddle is best?

There is no single best brand. The right brand is the one that fits both your horse and you. Bates Innova is the most popular mid-range choice in Australia, Wintec Isabell is the most popular synthetic, and PDS dominate the premium leather end. Call us with details on your horse and your riding level and we will recommend three brands worth trying.

Do I need a special dressage girth?

Yes. Dressage saddles are designed to be used with a short dressage girth, typically between 20" and 32", depending on your horse and saddle. The saddle has long billets that allow the girth buckles to sit well below the rider's leg, reducing bulk under the flap and improving comfort.

We stock a wide range of dressage girths in leather, synthetic materials and anatomical designs to suit different horses and disciplines.

How often should a dressage saddle be re-flocked?

If your saddle has traditional wool flocking, it should be checked regularly and may require re-flocking every 18 to 24 months, depending on how often it is ridden and how your horse changes shape. If you notice uneven panel contact, movement in the saddle or signs of back soreness, it's worth having the flocking assessed sooner.

Saddles fitted with the CAIR Cushion System, such as many Bates and Wintec models, do not require re-flocking. However, they should still be professionally checked every 12 to 18 months to ensure they continue to fit both horse and rider correctly.

What is a hoop tree saddle?

A hoop tree is designed for horses with broad, flatter backs and lower or less-defined withers. Unlike a traditional tree, which narrows more quickly at the front, a hoop tree has a wider, more open head that better accommodates horses with broad shoulders.

Hoop tree saddles are often well suited to cobs, Welsh breeds, Iberian horses, draft crosses and some broader Warmbloods. Several manufacturers, including Thorowgood offer hoop tree options.

Our team can help determine whether your horse is better suited to a traditional or hoop tree design.

Can I finance a dressage saddle?

Yes. We offer a range of finance options to help spread the cost of your new dressage saddle into manageable repayments.

Whether you're purchasing your first dressage saddle or investing in a premium competition model, our team can explain the finance options available and help you find a solution that suits your budget.

Do you sell ex-demo dressage saddles?

Yes. We regularly have a selection of ex-demonstration and quality used dressage saddles available at reduced prices.

Availability changes regularly, so browse our Ex-Demo Saddles collection or contact our team to find out what's currently in stock.

What accessories do I need with a new dressage saddle?

To get the best from your new dressage saddle, we recommend pairing it with:

  • A correctly fitted short dressage girth
  • A dressage-cut saddlecloth or numnah
  • Stirrup leathers
  • Stirrup irons

Depending on your horse, you may also benefit from accessories such as saddle covers, replacement gullet plates (where applicable), quality leather care products or correction pads used under the guidance of an experienced saddle fitter.

Our team can recommend the right accessories to complement your saddle and help ensure the best possible fit for both horse and rider.
