Collection: Body Protectors

Adult and junior fits make each body protector easier to compare for riding, training and cross-country use. A Champion back protector option includes the Ti22, while KD offers Ballistic Flex Fit versions for adults and juniors. The Vipa 3 protective vest adds another horse riding vest choice, with different coverage and fit profiles across the range. Champion, KD and Vipa provide options for riders at different stages and in several listed sizes. Anyone comparing an equestrian protective vest should follow the maker's fitting guidance and have the coverage checked in person, as correct length, adjustment and freedom of movement matter before riding.

Understanding Body Protector Standards

Body protectors are designed to absorb and disperse impact, helping reduce the risk of injury during a fall. When choosing a body protector, always look for one that meets the current recognised safety standards for your riding discipline.

BETA Certification

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) is one of the most widely recognised body protector certification systems.

Different certification levels are designed for different riding activities, with Level 3 offering the highest level of protection and being the standard required for cross-country and many higher-risk disciplines.

Because competition rules can change, always check the current requirements of your governing body before competing.

Air Vests

Air vests inflate using a CO₂ canister when the rider becomes separated from the saddle during a fall, providing additional protection to the upper body.

For many cross-country competitions, an air vest is designed to be worn over an approved Level 3 body protector, not as a replacement. Always check the current competition rules for your discipline before competing.

Replacement CO₂ canisters should be carried if you're competing over multiple rounds or days.

Getting the Right Fit

A body protector should fit snugly without restricting movement. It should remain securely in position while riding, allowing you to move comfortably while providing the intended level of protection.

Because body protectors vary considerably between brands and styles, we strongly recommend trying them on before purchasing wherever possible. This is particularly important for growing children and first-time buyers.

Body protectors should be inspected regularly and replaced after a significant impact, if the protective foam becomes damaged or distorted, or when recommended by the manufacturer.

What level body protector do I need?

For cross-country and many higher-risk disciplines, Level 3 body protectors are generally required. Requirements vary between organisations and competition levels, so always check the current rules for your discipline.

Can I wear an air vest instead of a body protector?

In many disciplines, no. Air vests are designed to provide additional protection and are commonly worn over an approved Level 3 body protector. Always check your governing body's current rules before competing.

When should I replace my body protector?

Replace your body protector after a significant fall, if the protective material becomes damaged or distorted, or when recommended by the manufacturer. Even without a fall, protective materials can deteriorate over time.

Do you stock children's body protectors?

Yes. We stock body protectors for children through to adults. Because children grow quickly and fit is critical to safety, we strongly recommend having younger riders professionally fitted.

Can I wear a body protector for trail riding?

Absolutely. Many riders choose to wear a body protector for trail riding, breaking in young horses, schooling and everyday riding, even when it's not required by competition rules.

Why is professional fitting important?

A body protector can only provide the intended level of protection if it fits correctly. Different brands vary in shape, length and flexibility, so trying several styles often results in a safer and more comfortable fit.

Ascot Expert Tip

Don't buy a body protector with the idea that your child will "grow into it." A body protector that's too large can move during a fall and won't provide the protection it was designed to offer. A correctly fitted protector is always the safest choice.
