What brands of saddles does Ascot Saddlery stock?
We stock one of Australia's largest ranges of saddles, including Bates, Wintec, Pessoa, Thorowgood, Prestige, PDS, Arena, Trainers, AMMO, Toowoomba Saddlery and Syd Hill. Our collection covers every riding discipline, from dressage and jumping through to general purpose, stock, half breed and western saddles, with options ranging from affordable synthetic models to premium handcrafted leather saddles.
Do you offer saddle fitting?
Yes. Professional saddle fitting is one of our specialties.
We provide personalised saddle fitting advice in our Flemington showroom as well as over the phone for customers across Australia. If you can't visit us, simply send photos of your horse's back, a few measurements and a short video of you riding. Our experienced team can recommend the saddles most likely to suit both horse and rider.
For customers who require an on-site fitting, we can also recommend experienced independent saddle fitters throughout Australia.
How do I know what size saddle I need?
Seat size depends on your build, leg length, riding discipline, saddle style and personal preference. Because every rider and saddle model is different, we recommend speaking with our team before ordering if you are uncertain of what size you need
Our experienced saddle fitting team can help guide you toward the correct seat size and style for your position, comfort and discipline.
What is the difference between gullet width and channel width?
These two measurements affect different parts of the saddle and are equally important for your horse's comfort.
Gullet width refers to the width of the saddle at the front, where it sits over your horse's withers and shoulders. On many modern saddles, including Bates, Wintec and several other brands, the gullet can be changed using interchangeable gullet plates to accommodate horses as they develop muscle or change shape.
Channel width is the space running the full length of the saddle between the panels. The channel sits over your horse's spine and must provide adequate clearance from front to back. A channel that is too narrow can place pressure on the spine and surrounding muscles, while a correctly sized channel allows your horse to move freely and comfortably.
Both gullet width and channel width need to suit your horse's conformation for a saddle to fit correctly. If you're unsure, our experienced saddle fitting team can help you choose the right saddle or advise whether your current saddle can be adjusted.
Can I finance my saddle purchase?
Yes. We offer a range of finance options to help spread the cost of your new saddle into manageable repayments.
Contact our team on (03) 9376 5444 to discuss the options available.
Do you offer free shipping on saddles?
Yes. We offer free Australia-wide shipping on almost all saddles.
Some bulky items and remote postcodes may incur additional freight charges. We also offer free shipping on many accessories and bridles over $150.
What is the difference between a stock saddle and a half breed saddle?
A stock saddle features larger poleys (knee pads) that provide excellent security when riding over rough terrain, working cattle or travelling at speed.
A half breed saddle has lower poleys and a more open seat, making it lighter and easier to mount and dismount. They are popular for trail riding, pleasure riding and station work where comfort and freedom of movement are important.
Do you sell ex-demo or used saddles?
Yes. We regularly stock a selection of ex-demonstration and quality used saddles at reduced prices.
Availability changes frequently, so visit our Ex-Demo Saddles collection or contact our team to see what's currently in stock.
How often should I have my saddle checked?
Most horses should have their saddle professionally checked every 12 to 18 months.
More frequent checks are recommended for young horses, horses returning to work, horses changing weight or fitness, or those developing new muscle. Regular saddle checks help prevent discomfort, back problems and behavioural issues before they become serious.
What accessories do I need with a new saddle?
To ride safely and comfortably you'll typically need:
- A saddlecloth or numnah
- A correctly fitted girth
- Stirrup leathers
- Stirrup irons
To protect your investment, we also recommend a saddle cover, quality leather cleaner and leather conditioner to keep your saddle in excellent condition for years to come.
What if my horse changes shape?
It's completely normal for horses to change shape throughout the year due to age, fitness, muscle development and seasonal weight changes.
Most saddles, particularly adjustable models from brands such as PDS, Pessoa, Bates and Wintec, can be modified to accommodate these changes. Our team can advise whether your current saddle can be adjusted or whether a different model would provide a better long-term fit.
