When to Wear Riding Glasses
Still need help?
Whether you're new to horses or know exactly what you're looking for, our experienced team is here to help with honest, practical advice.
Discover more in our FAQs
Can I wear my regular sunglasses for riding?
You can, provided they fit comfortably beneath your helmet and remain secure while riding. However, wraparound riding glasses generally provide better protection from wind, dust and insects and are less likely to move during faster work.
Are clear lenses worth having?
Yes. Clear lenses protect your eyes from wind, dust, branches and mud without reducing visibility, making them an excellent choice for overcast days, early morning rides and wet weather.
Do you stock prescription-compatible riding glasses?
Yes. We stock selected styles that can accommodate prescription lenses. Contact our team to discuss the options available.
What is the difference between riding glasses and riding goggles?
Riding glasses are lightweight and comfortable for everyday use, while riding goggles provide greater coverage around the eyes and are often preferred where maximum protection from dust, wind and debris is required.
Should I choose polarised or standard lenses?
Polarised lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces such as water, sand and wet ground, making them a popular choice for trail riding and endurance. Standard UV-protection lenses are an excellent option for everyday riding in most conditions.
Do riding glasses fog up?
Modern riding glasses with anti-fog coatings are designed to minimise fogging in humid or cold conditions. Good ventilation and correct fit also help keep lenses clear while riding.
Ascot Expert Tip
Many experienced riders keep two pairs of riding glasses in their gear bag—polarised lenses for bright sunny days and clear lenses for overcast conditions, dawn, dusk or riding through bushland. Changing glasses to suit the conditions only takes a moment and can make a noticeable difference to comfort and visibility.
